I Love Thee, My Dear Nigeria (Poem)
How do I tell my children
That kobo is Nigeria’s currency
When there is none available?
How do I tell my children
That the bread which now sells for 150 naira
Once sold for 25 naira?
How do I tell my children
To believe in this nation
If I stop believing in it?
Oh my dear Nigeria
I have not stopped believing in thy future
But I am so overwhelmed by thy current wrongs.
I want an environment my children can grow in
But when I look around, I see
Something quite the opposite
If I claim to hate thee
I lie,
But how do I love thee like this?
How do I claim I am of thee
With all I see on thee?
How do I?
Yet, I love thee, my dear Nigeria.
All I can do is pray for thy best,
And do what I can where I can for thee.
Happy 62 independent years.
