In the book of 2 Kings chapter 5 in the Bible, the story of Naaman, a mighty man of valour of Syria is unveiled. Though his many qualifications, he had a but in his life; he was leprous.

During one of the invasions of the Syrians in Israel, a little girl was captured and made to serve as Naaman’s wife’s maid. This girl revealed to her mistress the power of God that was able to heal her husband through Prophet Elisha. Her mistress believed her and informed her husband, who also took steps to meet with Prophet Elisha.

I am urged to conclude that the maid was being treated well; why? She was willing and able to proffer a solution to her master’s problem. She believed her mistress would heed to her words and it was so.

When Naaman got to Prophet Elisha’s abode, Prophet Elisha chose not to meet with him but sent a messenger to tell him to wash himself seven times in Jordan’s river. This angered Naaman and he was unwilling to do as he was bidden, but his servants with wisdom encouraged him to follow the instruction and when he did, he was cured of his ailment.

It can rightly be said that the wise counsels around Naaman made him follow Prophet Elisha’s instruction. Had he lacked such good counsels, he would have returned to his country worse off for he would have become a bitter man. This also shows his openness. His servant had the opportunity to tactfully encourage him to do the right thing.

Yet another lesson we can learn is his attitude of thanksgiving. After his healing, he went back to meet Prophet Elisha to say thank you. This time, he was privileged to meet him in person, and though Prophet Elisha refused his gifts, he was blessed to “Go in peace.”

The valiant Syrian was not just blessed with good information; he was blessed with a wonderful spouse and wise servants, which led to his healing and salvation.

His story reminds us of the need to be good, and humble, and to surround ourselves with wise counsels.

Thank you for reading.
