A Letter to My Mother

I remember
The days
It was just you and I.

Bro in the boarding school,
Dad away,
Stubborn me around.

I still remember
Your tears
And fears.

Can’t forget the days
When no money held your purse
And no sauce, your pot.

But I still
Had a fill;
How could I forget?

My fees always paid,
I never wondered how
Back then.

Morning to morning,
You were always on the move,
Though I was a burden.

Truly you did try to bring
Joy to my face,
But I was never satisfied.

I always wanted you around
But you had to be on the go,
Just for our comfort.

I never really understood,
But how could I?
My tummy always filled.

Mummy buy this, mummy buy that,
Was always my cry;
Never bothered to ask,

Mummy, what do you want?
It was all about me to me,
But all about us to you.

Now I understand;
Now I know the pain you felt
But with smiles on your face.

I and bro fees had to always be paid,
Rents to be settled,
And tummies had to be filled.

How you did it
With a stubborn me around,
That I don’t understand.

You don’t have to be
The best mom
In the world.

But you are the best mom
I could ever have;
That’s why God gave me you.

This I write to celebrate you,
But above all things,
Bless God for giving me you.
